Horrors of the Death penalty

Did you know that it costs more money to put someone on death row, than it does to keep them in prison for the rest of their life? Some experts say that its unconstitutional because in the constitution it says the punishment must fit the crime, and some think that no crime is worth death. Lastly it doesn’t bring the victim back to life, so some think that it’s not worth the pain caused to the family of the individual sentenced to death.

One reason why the death penalty is bad, is because "It costs 3 times greater where the death penalty is not sought. And we can’t afford that, when there are better and cheaper ways to reduce crime.” Said governor Martin O'Malley. In some, places to have a death sentence is better then to spend the rest of their life in prison. For example, in Miami it cost $3.2 million for a death sentence and only $750,000 for a life sentence in prison, said the Miami Herold. Also the California death penalty system costs taxpayers $114 million per year beyond the costs of keeping convicts locked up for life. Taxpayers have paid more than $250 million for each of the states executions. Explained the L.A times. It costs so much for a death sentence because the state has to pay for all the lawyers, the court time, and the actual injection. Also it doesn’t bring the victim back to life so some people don’t see why it is worth it to put the criminal to death.

Another reason why the death penalty is so horrific is because it can cause excruciating pain. Gov. Jeb Bush exclaimed that one lethal injection took the prisoner 34 minutes to die and he suffered chemical burns in the process. But since the first injection on December 7, 1982 over 1,000 prisoners in the USA have been executed by this method, and it has replaced all other forms of killing by the death penalty. It is so painful, however, that the person being put to death can't show it because the pancuronium bromide paralyzes them. Some executions have lasted 20 minutes to over an hour long. During this time some prisoners have been seen gasping for air, grimacing and convulsing during executions. Lastly, autopsies have shown horrible foot long chemical burns to the skin and the needles have been found in the soft tissue.

So as you can see, the death penalty has many bad things about it. For example it hurts very bad that it leaves burns on the victim’s body. Also it cost 3-6 times greater for the death penalty rather than having them sit the rest of their life in jail. So I personally believe that there should be no death penalty because there are so many cons to it. But lets look at all the facts.
